Water Use Information Roundtable – November 25, 2010 – Ottawa, Ontario

In the report Changing Currents: Water Sustainability and the Future of Canada’s Natural Resource Sectors, the NRTEE identified shortcomings in our knowledge of water use by the natural resource sectors as a key challenge in sustainably managing the resource.

Therefore, this meeting was intended to:

  • To help the NRTEE understand how water use information in Canada could be improved to sustainably, effectively, and efficiently manage water
  • Provide us with information that will enable us to make recommendations to governments in our next report (Fall 2011)
  • Enable information sharing amongst practitioners

Questions:

  • What are the challenges or barriers to filling data gaps, improving data accuracy, and integrating water use information across regional boundaries?
  • What is the value of more accurate, accessible, integrated water use information to: 1) water management and policy development, 2) the natural resource sectors?
  • What is needed to make water use information useful across different scales and sectors in order to inform management, policy, and allocation decisions now and into the future?
  • How could the federal government, provincial/territorial governments, watershed authority/groups, and/or industry improve the state of water information in Canada collectively or individually?
