Working Paper # 7 Environmental Impact Assessment and Competitiveness (November 1992)The goal of this study was to contribute to the quest for sustainable development by analyzing the relationship between the process of environmental impact assessment and the competitiveness of the Canadian economy. EIA is a process intended to achieve more effective and efficient decision making in both the private and the public sectors of the economy with respect to developments that may have negative impacts on the environment. To the extent that EIA achieves these goals it may be said to contribute to Canada's competitiveness. However, to the extent that EIA processes are overused and misused they may backfire and decrease Canada's competitiveness.
