Contaminated sites pose a significant challenge to sustainability and prosperity in Canada. Although the estimates vary, the remediation of just those sites that pose "a significant health and environmental risk" may well involve billions of dollars and take more than a generation to complete. This paper examines the issues that concern lenders, in particular what sites should be cleaned up, to what standards and who should pay for the clean-up.
