Roundtable Discussion on Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation – Theme 2 – October 5, 2010

NATIONAL ROUND TABLE / ROYAL CANADIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY INITIATIVE

Theme II – What early lessons are emerging from adaptation initiatives by governments, communities, and industry?

Individuals, community groups, industry, and governments across the country are already undertaking initiatives to adapt to current and expected changes in climate.  Some of these are informal initiatives taken in reaction to recent weather events; others provide a more structured, collaborative approach to adaptation.  The purpose of Theme II is to uncover factors that are enabling and inhibiting adaptation to climate change.  The moderator will first ask participants with experience leading or engaging in adaptation initiatives to share lessons – both successes and failures – by exploring the following questions:

  • How did climate change adaptation get onto your organization’s agenda?  What motivated action?
  • What factors contributed to successes in your adaptation initiative(s)?
  • What factors posed challenges to accomplishing the objectives of your adaptation initiative(s)?
  • What were the key lessons learned?  What approaches are you using or planning to use to transfer lessons from your experiences?
