RESEARCH

We rigorously research and conduct high quality analysis on issues of sustainable development. Our thinking is original and thought provoking.

CONVENE

We convene opinion leaders and experts from across Canada around our table to share their knowledge and diverse perspectives. We stimulate debate and integrate polarities. We create a context for possibilities to emerge.

ADVISE

We generate ideas and provide realistic solutions to advise governments, Parliament and Canadians. We proceed with resolve and optimism to bring Canada’s economy and environment closer together.

A summary of the discussion

Solutions to environmental problems must involve global cooperation on both environmental and economic issues. In keeping with that objective, the United National Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED) was organized and brought together world leaders in Brazil in 1992. As part of Canada's preparations for that summit dialogue was stimulated across Canadian society. Scientists, business leaders, government decision-makers, and environmentalists were brought together to discuss issues that are both local and global in nature. As a contribution to this global dialogue, the Foreign Policy Committee of the NRTEE, in response to proposals from the Japanese government, organized a workshop which was held June 26, 1991. This report is a summary of the workshop discussions.
