A Conversation on Climate Change

In a spirit of collaboration, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy are partnering in a pan-Canadian endeavour to raise awareness and understanding of what climate change could mean to Canada. We hope to reach a broad audience and contribute to a national dialogue on this important issue.

Cover - Canadian Geographic - October 2010The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy is an independent federal organization which plays the role of catalyst in identifying, explaining and promoting, in all sectors of Canadian society and in all regions of Canada, principles and practices of sustainable development. The Round Table has embarked on an ambitious research initiative to ensure that Canada is well-prepared to both adapt and prosper as a result of climate change.

Since its founding in 1929, The Royal Canadian
Geographical Society has concerned itself with Canada’s environmental stewardship. The Society has reported on the changing climate for many years in its magazines Canadian Geographic and Géographica. In October 2008, the Society joined with its counterparts in Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa in a joint statement on climate change. The statement underscored the educational role and responsibilities
geographical societies play in light of climate change. Exercising this educational role, the Society has partnered with the Round Table to motivate, encourage and inspire people to participate in adaptive solutions related to climate change.

The October 2010 special issues of Canadian Geographic and Géographica and the accompanying poster-map are key elements of a larger project designed to reach Canadians in schools, at home, in government and in business to engage them and
explain the vital matter of the changing climate in Canada and the opportunities it presents. The publication of these issues will be followed by a series of outreach sessions in cities across the country to involve Canadians in the exploration and discussion of this important topic.

Climate change warrants our attention if, as Canadians, we are to succeed now and in the future in dealing with this issue.
